Bequest of work to Bernard Samuels
Soon after he settled in Presteigne, Ben Hartley made a will in which he left all his work to Bernard Samuels. Though he had kept in touch, he knew nothing of this until he received news of his death via a solicitor in Wales. The bequest contained 900 paintings and 320 notebooks. As well as large quantities of material of which Bernard Samuels had absolutely no knowledge, in spite of his twenty years of involvement, the bequest contained significant revelations about the scope and development of the work.
